Custom Quicksand Standees — Thicker, Fuller, More Like Art Than Merch
Turn it upside down.
Watch the confetti and glitter pile against what was the top, now the bottom. Hearts, stars, moons — they settle into a layer, dense and still. Then turn it right-side up again. The whole mass starts to drift. Not all at once. In clusters, then trickles, then individual pieces floating on their own timelines.
This is the quicksand effect — named for the way fine particulates behave in viscous liquid, which is nothing like actual quicksand and exactly like what it looks like.
The difference between this and a regular glitter standee is the liquid itself. Thicker. More saturated with glitter. Tinted in the background colour — teal, rose, lavender — so the character isn't sitting against transparent acrylic. They're sitting inside a world with its own atmosphere.
The standee is noticeably heavier than a standard acrylic display piece. That weight comes from two things: the acrylic itself and the volume of liquid inside.
Standard shaker standees use a 3mm front panel with a shallow chamber behind. This standee uses 8–10mm of total depth — the chamber is substantially larger, which means more liquid, more glitter, and a longer settling time that makes the motion more visible and more satisfying at desk viewing distance.
When you hold it, it feels like a block rather than a panel. The edges are visible as clear acrylic around the coloured liquid interior. Looking at the side of the standee, you can see the tinted liquid sitting behind the character print, with confetti pieces suspended throughout.
The arch shape at the top isn't incidental either. It gives the standee the profile of a reliquary or a stained glass window panel — something with a history of being a contained, precious thing. That shape carries associations that a rectangle or a die-cut silhouette doesn't.
This is the part that separates the quicksand standee from the transparent shaker version most noticeably.
In a clear shaker standee, the background behind the character is whatever is physically behind the standee — your wall, your desk surface, whatever you've positioned it in front of. The character exists in real space.
In a quicksand standee, the background is the liquid itself. Teal. Rose. Lavender. The character is printed in front of a layer of coloured, glitter-filled liquid that has its own visual density. The character appears to exist inside a specific environment — a teal night sky, a rose-gold sunset, a purple dusk — rather than floating in front of your real desk.
This distinction matters for character presentation. A character who exists inside a designed world reads differently than a character who exists in front of your actual bookshelf. The quicksand liquid is a background designer, not a special effect.
The three standees in the image show the same character in three different liquid colours, which is also a product decision: same character, different moods, different worlds. Buyers who want the character in the teal version and the rose version are buying two distinct objects, not two copies of the same thing.
The choice of what floats inside changes the character of the standee considerably.
Stars and moons (centre standee) The celestial set — gold and holographic stars in multiple sizes, crescent moon shapes. In teal liquid, the moons read as the actual moon in a night sky. The scale relationship between the character and the moons creates an impression of depth: some moons appear close, others far.
Hearts (left standee) Black hearts in rose-gold tinted liquid. The hearts are large enough to be clearly legible as heart shapes, not just dots. They cluster together when the standee is tilted, then separate as they drift. The effect is specifically romantic, not generically cute.
Butterflies (right standee) Purple butterfly confetti in lavender liquid. The butterfly shapes are die-cut — actual butterfly silhouettes, not approximations. In the purple liquid, they almost disappear when the density is high, then become distinct as they separate during settling.
Each confetti type creates a different narrative around the same character. The choice isn't cosmetic — it changes what the character seems to be part of.
The quicksand standee is a presence in a room, not a detail.
At 150–200mm tall with a significant base and substantial depth, it reads from across the room in a way that smaller display pieces don't. Place it on a white desk and the coloured liquid interior draws the eye from three or four metres away. The character artwork is visible at normal desk distance. The liquid motion is visible whenever someone moves near the desk.
Morning light from a side window: the tinted liquid glows. The character sits inside a column of coloured light. The glitter in the teal version catches the light and scatters small cyan and gold points outward.
Direct light from above: the top surface of the liquid is illuminated and the glitter near the top is the brightest. The character print has a halo quality at the edges.
Low ambient light: the standee becomes a muted object, but the glitter still catches the slightest light source. A single candle a metre away is enough to pick out individual star pieces moving slowly.
People who've had one on their desk describe noticing it differently each time the light changes. That's not a feature anyone designed — it's a consequence of using liquid and metallic particulates as material.
Collectors ready to spend more on fewer, better things The quicksand standee costs more than a standard acrylic piece. That's appropriate. It's also noticeably more substantial — heavier, deeper, more present. Collectors who've been buying lower-cost standees and want to transition toward quality tend to find this format genuinely satisfying in a way that the next standard standee wouldn't be.
Artists building a premium product tier If you make keychains and flat standees, a quicksand standee is your flagship — the piece that signals to buyers that your work exists at a higher level than typical artist alley fare. Price it accordingly. Display it prominently. Let it be the thing people ask about first.
Character creators whose characters have a defined colour world The tinted liquid background is a direct representation of a character's colour palette. A teal-world character belongs in teal liquid. A rose-toned character belongs in rose liquid. The standee becomes a three-dimensional expression of the character's identity, not just a display of their illustration.
Gift buyers who want something genuinely impressive A quicksand standee in a gift box is a significantly more impressive opening moment than almost anything else in the custom character merch space. The weight of it. The coloured liquid visible through the packaging. The first tilt and the glitter beginning to move. It's a gift that has a reaction built into it.
How is this different from the clear shaker standee you also make? The quicksand standee has tinted (coloured) liquid rather than clear, more glitter volume, thicker acrylic construction, and a taller arch frame rather than a die-cut character silhouette. The overall effect is more like a self-contained art object than a character display with a special effect added.
Can I choose the liquid colour? Yes. Current standard options are teal/aqua, rose/coral, and lavender/purple. Additional colour options are available for orders above a minimum quantity. We recommend a liquid colour that relates to your character's colour palette — we'll suggest options based on your artwork when you submit.
Does the glitter settle to the bottom over time if left undisturbed? Yes — at rest, the heavier confetti pieces gradually settle. This is expected and is part of the product's behaviour. Tilting the standee redistributes them. Many owners tilt their standees each morning as a small daily ritual, which keeps the interior in motion throughout the day.
What size is this standee? Standard height is 160–200mm including the base. The arch opening (where the character and liquid are visible) is approximately 100–140mm wide at the widest point, narrowing to the arch at the top.
Is the character visible from both the front and the back? The character is printed on the front face. From the back, you see clear acrylic with the coloured liquid and glitter visible through it — no character print, but the interior is visible and attractive in its own right.
Minimum order? No minimum. Single pieces available. Most artists order one sample of each liquid colour before deciding which to add to their product lineup.

It is a three-layer sealed acrylic display piece: a thick clear front acrylic panel, a permanently sealed middle chamber pre-filled with colored liquid and floating
sequins/glitter, and a back acrylic panel printed with your original character artwork. Tilt or shake it and watch the sequins and glitter drift slowly through the
liquid in real time — a living, moving display unlike any standard standee. No assembly, no leaks — everything is sealed at the factory before shipping.
The liquid chamber is permanently factory-sealed between two thick acrylic panels — it cannot be opened or refilled. The seal is tested before shipping.
Customer reviews confirm zero leaks under normal display and handling conditions. The standee is safe for desks, shelves, display cases, and convention booths.

No minimum order — you can order as few as 1 piece.
Important: Due to liquid content restrictions on certain shipping channels, large quantity orders may need to be split into multiple shipments. If your order
quantity exceeds shipping channel limits, our team will contact you with options.
Our optical-grade acrylic achieves 93.9% light transmittance — higher than glass (approximately 92%) and far above regular plastic (70–85%). This means the liquid
and your printed artwork remain vivid and clear without any distortion or yellowing. The sandwich construction also protects the print from scratches and fading indefinitely.
Yes — you can add 0 to 6 custom-shaped acrylic pieces inside the liquid chamber (each piece +$0.25). These small acrylic charms float and drift alongside the sequins
when you tilt the standee. Popular options include small stars, hearts, flowers, or miniature character accessories. Provide the design for each acrylic piece with your order.
